Product Owner to Data & Analytics
Helsinki, FI, 00500
Job ID: 4013
We're an award-winning insurance company looking for a Product Owner who owns what data gets built, how it's modelled, and whether it matches the business needs. Someone who has built data solutions before and now would rather oversee the data points our systems already produce and connects them to problems we haven't solved yet.
Welcome to Nordea Life & Pension Finland. We are a solvent Finnish life insurance company and part of the Nordea Group, but we are not Nordea Bank’s everyday banking business. Our focus is on life insurance, savings and pension-related products, and while Nordea Bank acts as an important distribution channel and agent for several of our products, Nordea Life & Pension has its own business domain, products and dedicated IT organisation.
About this opportunity
Nordea Life & Pension Finland combines the strengths of a specialised insurance company with the backing of a large financial group. We are much smaller than Nordea Bank, which means closer collaboration, shorter decision paths and strong ownership in day-to-day work. At the same time, because we are part of the Nordea Group, the role also requires the ability to work across shared platforms, common processes and a larger enterprise environment.
We are a small company recognized repeatedly as Finland's best financial sector workplace by Great Place to Work and winner of the Finnish Quality Award. Quality is not a project; it is part of how we think. We do things properly, improve continuously, and keep structures light so people can focus on meaningful work.
We are looking for a technical Product Owner for Data & Analytics. The role is based in Kaisaniemi, Helsinki. Our data products serve the business end-to-end: policy and claims data, customer analytics, investment data, actuarial reports, and regulatory submissions.
You'll work across two capabilities:
- Analytics (data scientist and analyst)
- Data engineering (1 on-site data engineer and 4 off-shore consultants)
One owner across both. Technical enough to make implementation calls, catch data quality issues, and set the standards others follow. We keep process light. If you thrive on ownership and impact over ceremony, this is the role for you.
Data ownership (60-70% of your time)
- Prioritize and manage the intake of business needs across both teams, deciding what gets built and in what order
- Own data quality and integrity. When numbers don't add up, investigate and drive root-cause resolution
- Make architectural and implementation decisions with the database application owner and provider
- Set development standards for pipelines: naming, documentation, testing, review
- Manage offshore delivery with clear specifications and quality gates
- Keep stakeholders informed as requests and fixes move through both teams
Analytics ownership (30-40% of your time)
- Define what good looks like for BI and self-service analytics: performant models, clear visualizations, users enabled without maintenance debt
- Prioritize analytics requests and ensure outputs are trustworthy and traceable to governed sources
- Bring data expertise to cross-functional discussions and participate in PI planning, focused on outcomes over ceremony.
Our stack: QlikSense, SQL, Python, IBM DB2 and Informatica in hybrid environment. We take pride in making it work excellently, well-documented and high-quality. Longer-term, help identify where targeted improvements or new tools genuinely add value based on evidence and business needs.
Who you are
You think about data the way a good engineer thinks about code: structured, tested, documented, built to last. You've seen what happens when pipelines grow without standards and when nobody owns quality. You know what great BI looks like regardless of the tool.
Here are some practical things that would definitely help you succeed in this job:
- Hands-on background in data engineering, at least +3 years
- Proficiency in SQL
- Comfort reading and reviewing Python
- Strong documentation and communication skills
- Solid grasp of BI and self-service analytics
- Experience translating business needs into actionable work for technical teams
- Experience managing or guiding offshore delivery
- Fluency in Finnish and English. Business communication happens in Finnish.
It would be beneficial if you have/know:
- Track record owning a backlog and making prioritization calls across competing demands
- Experience setting technical standards and reviewing others' work
- Made deliberate shift from building to owning
- Background in insurance, pensions, or financial services
- Understanding of data governance or compliance in regulated environments
- Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent depth through experience
Showing strengths in one area compensates for shortcomings in another. We encourage you to submit your application and briefly elaborate if that is something you are motivated to learn.
What we offer
We believe that great people deserve great benefits, so we offer you:
- Lunch, sport & culture benefit
- Banking benefits, e.g. personnel mortgage margin and free daily banking services
- Modern office above metro station and close to train station
- Training and education possibilities
- Collaborative, open culture where leadership walks the talk and your voice genuinely influences decisions
- A team that is genuinely curious, takes pride in doing things well, shares knowledge openly, and celebrates improvements together
