Versatile Senior/Expert IT Developer for STO Domain API
Helsinki, FI, 00500
Job ID: 5420
Welcome to Group Technology, where we pride ourselves on engineering solutions and direct Nordea’s transformation by providing a holistic technological view and structured understanding of the bank, and its surrounding environment to enable the Customer Vision and the Business Strategy.
We are looking for a skilled and versatile IT Developer to strengthen the STO Domain API team. The role combines hands-on backend development with analysis, integration design, deployment automation, data-model understanding and willingness to learn the securities trading domain. This a permanent, full-time position with hybrid working according to Nordea guidelines.
At Nordea, technology supports secure and responsible financial services at Nordic scale. In this role, your work will contribute to simplifying the securities technology landscape and improving how services are exposed to internal consumers across trading operations.
About our team
Meet the Securities Trading Operations development team. Our role is to build and modernise services that support safekeeping, settlement, asset servicing and related trading operations processes.
The STO Domain API is a strategic in-house developed integration layer that exposes common business services as data products. It hides technical complexity and data location, replacing point-to-point integrations with canonical services available through API Gateway.
The solution is built around System APIs, connectors, internal integration services and business logic components. It is intended to support use cases such as retrieving safekeeping account details, holdings, transactions, position information and other custody-related services. The target platform includes API Gateway/Kong, Kubernetes, Kotlin, Kafka and PostgreSQL, while the broader team also works with Java, IBM MQ, CI/CD and automated testing.
The growing team’s strategy is to increase resilient delivery capacity, strengthen mentoring and add future-proof skills across development, analysis, integration, automation and responsible use of AI-assisted development.
Main responsibilities in this role:
- Analyse business requirements, data models, system flows and dependencies, and translate them into clear technical designs and implementable delivery tasks.
- Design, develop and maintain services in and around the STO Domain API, including backend code, connectors, integration services and transforming logic.
- Set up and improve integrations with source systems using Kafka, IBM MQ, REST services and related enterprise integration patterns.
- Configure and improve the deployment toolchain, including build pipelines, automated tests, deployment automation, monitoring and troubleshooting support.
- Contribute to code reviews, documentation, quality improvements, technical standards and knowledge sharing across the team.
Who you are
This is the right role for you if you are a versatile backend developer with broad technical curiosity. You are comfortable moving between development, analysis, integration, and DevOps. You do not need to start as a trading-domain expert, but you should want to understand how the business process works and how technology choices affect resilience, maintainability and risk.
You take ownership of problems also when the answer is not obvious. You ask structured questions, document what matters, collaborate with architects and stakeholders, and help the team build maintainable solutions rather than isolated quick fixes.
Your background and skills include:
- Strong Java experience in large-scale enterprise systems.
- Ability to analyse requirements, data models, documentation, and cross-system dependencies.
- Experience with messaging, data transformations, and API integrations from both analysis and development standpoint.
- Solid knowledge of SQL, relational databases, datastores, messaging (Kafka, IBM MQ or similar).
- Experience with Maven, Git, CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins/Bamboo, or comparable tools.
- Testing experience with JUnit, Testcontainers, and automated regression/integration testing.
It would be ideal if you also:
- Have experience in banking, securities trading, custody, settlement, corporate actions or another regulated domain.
- Have practical experience with Kubernetes, OpenShift-style platforms, containerisation, cloud-ready design and publishing through Kong or similar API Gateway.
- Have acted as a technical lead, mentor, code reviewer or a design sparring partner for less experienced colleagues.
- Have practical experience with AI-assisted development tools, test automation, static code analysis and other productivity-enhancing engineering practices.
