ESG Screening Analyst - Sustainability Research (NAM Portugal)
Paço de Arcos, PT, 2770-131
Job ID: 5738
We are looking for a methodical and detail-oriented analyst to join our Sustainability Research team on a full-time employment agreement to screen companies for ESG risks using a structured methodology and AI-assisted tools.
About our team
Meet the Sustainability Research team. Our role is to analyse companies on sustainability matters so that Nordea Asset Management's (NAM) investment decisions and funds are aligned with client expectations and regulatory standards and so portfolio managers can incorporate sustainability risk into their investment decisions.
Our team sits within the Responsible Investment unit of NAM. We are a team of analysts based in Denmark, Sweden, Singapore and Portugal, covering company-level ESG research, engagement, and screening across NAM’s investment fund range. This role will report to the Head of Sustainability Research. The work feeds investment decisions ahead of trading, so cadence matters — but quality cannot slip to meet it.
- The role is based in Oeiras (Quinta da Fonte).
- It’s expected you to work 100% on-site in the first 6 months and after on an Hybrid regime (3 days in the Office + 2 days from home).
Collaboration. Ownership. Passion. Courage. These are the values that guide us in how we work and how we make decisions – and that we imagine you share with us.
What you’ll be doing
Your day will typically start with opening your allocated company list, retrieving relevant data, running AI-assisted screening tools and doing independent research on companies on the list, and either documenting and closing the case or preparing an escalation for an ESG sector specialist. The volume of coverage is approximately 15–25 companies per week, or around 600 companies per year.
Most cases will conclude with you, documented and closed. A minority will be escalated to an ESG sector specialist. Calibrating that decision well — neither over- nor under-escalating — is a core part of the role.
Main responsibilities in this role:
- Screening companies systematically against a defined process and criteria, using NAM's internal AI-assisted tools, the NAM ESG platform, external data providers and doing any needed research to conclude the case.
- Documenting conclusions in line with established formatting standards.
- Preparing escalation packages for ESG sector specialists, including a summary of findings and a proposed conclusion.
- Contributing to the calibration and refinement of NAM's AI-assisted screening tools over time.
Who you are
This is the right role for you if you find professional satisfaction in clean execution of structured work, including on days when "no issue found, documented, closed" is the entire deliverable. Specifically, you:
- Prefer thoroughness over speed and verify your work before finalising it.
- Notice anomalies — in figures, names, dates, or context — without relying on a system to flag them.
- Apply the same rigour to the hundredth case as to the first
- Treat your own discipline as the primary quality control, not a backstop behind someone else's review.
- Exercise judgement on when to escalate and when to close — neither over-escalating nor letting borderline cases through.
- Treat documentation as something that must be reliable for the next person who uses it.
- Do not treat routine as an invitation to lower standards.
You do not need ESG knowledge. What we cannot teach is the disposition to work precisely and systematically at volume.
Your background and skills include:
- A university degree in any discipline.
- A methodical approach to analytical work, and comfort with structured, repetitive tasks where there is a clear process and clear criteria to apply.
- Written and verbal communication skills in English.
- An interest in learning about sustainable investment.
It would be ideal if you also:
- Have prior exposure to ESG, sustainability, or financial data analysis.
- Have worked with AI-assisted analytical tools in a professional setting.
- Have experience in roles where audit trails and documentation quality are part of how performance is judge.
None of the above is required — full training is provided.
What we offer
About the role: Direct, hands-on experience with AI-assisted analytical tools and a meaningful contribution to their ongoing development; access to leading external ESG data providers; and exposure to the European sustainable finance regulatory framework. Analysts who develop expertise in this role take on responsibility for refining the screening methodology, calibrating the AI tools, and contributing to the Sustainability Risk integration in the investment portfolios of Nordea Asset Management. This is a distinct specialisation within the team rather than a structured pathway into ESG sector analyst positions, though ESG screening analysts may over time contribute to sector work in areas where they have built relevant depth.
Onboarding is structured over approximately 8–12 weeks, covering methodology, tools, and documentation standards, with supervised screening and structured feedback before independent work begins. You will be assigned a named buddy and have regular check-ins with the Head of Sustainability Research.
Diversity and inclusion are a natural part of our daily work. We know that an inclusive workplace is a sustainable one.
